Our region
Our five holiday cottages are in Vessey, in the Manche department of Normandy: 15 minutes from Mont-Saint-Michel, 15 minutes from the first beaches of the bay and 40 minutes from Saint-Malo. Here is what the region offers from your gîte, as day trips and without a motorway.
Mont-Saint-Michel, 15 minutes away
Our cottages are a 15-minute drive from the Mont-Saint-Michel car parks, a few kilometres from the Couesnon river that marks the border with Brittany. Visit the Mont early in the morning or late in the day, before and after the coaches: the neighbours’ privilege.
The bay and its spring tides
Mont-Saint-Michel bay has the largest tides in continental Europe: at coefficients of 100 and above, the sea covers several kilometres in a few hours and surrounds the Mont. We publish the upcoming dates from the official forecasts.
Beaches and the Normandy coast
The first beaches of the bay, Genêts and the Bec d’Andaine, are 15 minutes from our cottages. Granville, its upper town, harbour and beaches are 45 minutes away, with boats to the Chausey islands.
Neighbouring Brittany
Saint-Malo is 40 minutes away, Cancale 45, Fougères 35 and Dinan 40: from our cottages, Normandy and Brittany fit into the same day.

Autumn in the bay, and the D-Day beaches as a day trip
The bay in autumn: mist, light and spring tides
In October and November the bay changes: misty mornings over the salt meadows, low sun on the sands, skies that turn within an hour. It is also a season of big tides: on 27 October 2026 the coefficient reaches 100 according to the official forecasts. You can visit the Mont without the summer crowds, 15 minutes from our cottages, and the heated pool at 28 °C is waiting when you get back from your walk.
Migrating birds: brent geese, waders and spoonbills
The bay has been a wetland protected under the Ramsar Convention since 1994. Brent geese are present from October to March, in their thousands along the Manche coast according to LPO Normandie. You will also see sanderlings, grey herons and spoonbills. Chemins de la Baie runs a guided birdwatching walk of 2h30 from Saint-Jean-le-Thomas or the Bec d’Andaine, telescope provided: €13 per adult, €8 for ages 3 to 14, prices checked on 21 September 2026.
Utah Beach and Omaha Beach in a day
The D-Day beaches make a day trip from our cottages. Allow about 1h30 by road to the Utah Beach museum at Sainte-Marie-du-Mont, and about 1h30 to the American Cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer, above Omaha Beach, based on a Mappy route calculation without stops. A simple order: Utah Beach in the morning, Omaha Beach and the cemetery in the afternoon. Leave early: the loop means more than 4 hours at the wheel.
Where to stay to visit the D-Day beaches?
If the D-Day beaches are the only aim of your trip, staying in Calvados, near the beaches, shortens the drives. If you also want Mont-Saint-Michel, Saint-Malo and the bay, our cottages make a base for the whole week: one day for the beaches, the others around the bay, without changing accommodation. Five neighbouring gîtes for 2 to 10 guests, up to 30 together, with a heated pool open all year.
Autumn and the D-Day beaches: your questions
When can you see migrating birds in the bay?
Brent geese are present from October to March, with most sightings from October to February according to LPO Normandie. According to Normandy Tourism, autumn and winter are rich seasons for birdwatching, because the birds are less disturbed by people.
Where can you watch birds without a guide?
Normandy Tourism names the Bec d’Andaine, the Pointe du Grouin du Sud and the cliffs of Carolles, on the GR 223 footpath. Bring binoculars and stay on the path or the top of the beaches: never head out alone onto the sands, the tide comes in fast there.
What is the Maison de la Baie in Vains?
It is the eco-museum of Mont-Saint-Michel bay, at Vains-Saint-Léonard, on the route du Grouin du Sud: natural habitats, seasonal wildlife and plants, shore fishing, farming on the salt meadows. It is open all year except 1 May and from 15 December to 15 January (checked on 21 September 2026).
How long does it take to reach the D-Day beaches?
About 1h30 to Utah Beach and about 1h30 to the American Cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer, above Omaha Beach, according to a Mappy route calculation from our cottages, without stops or traffic. The round trip fits into one day if you leave early.
What are the opening hours of the American Cemetery and the Utah Beach museum?
The American Cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer is open every day from 9:00 to 17:00, last entry at 16:30, closed on 25 December and 1 January; entry is free. The Utah Beach museum opens from October to April from 10:00 to 18:00. Hours checked on 21 September 2026.
