From October to March the bay changes face: the Mont can be visited without queuing, the equinox spring tides fill the bay within hours, and our cottages in Vessey, 15 minutes from the Mont, keep their indoor heated pool open all year. Here is what you need to know for a good winter stay.
The Mont without the crowds
In winter the abbey and the Grande Rue can be walked without queues, and the low late-afternoon light over the bay is the finest of the year. The Mont is a 15 minute drive from our cottages; the shuttles run all year from the car parks.
The spring tides
Several times a year, on spring tides with a coefficient of 100 or more, and above all around the March and September equinoxes, the sea comes in “as fast as a galloping horse” and surrounds the Mont. Watch it from the ramparts or the footbridge, about two hours before high water. Dates and coefficients are published each year in the official tide tables and by the tourist office; we give them to you when you book.
Crossing the bay barefoot, with a guide
Even in winter the bay can be crossed barefoot or in boots, only with a certified guide: quicksand and tides do not forgive improvisation. Crossings leave from Bec d’Andaine, 15 minutes from our cottages.
The pool at 28 °C while it freezes outside
This is our signature: the indoor heated pool is open from 8am to 8pm all year round, and the traditional sauna on its terrace is included, upon booking a time slot. After a day in the wind of the bay, a swim is part of the stay.
Low-season rates and discounts
From October to March our cottages are at low-season rates, and length-of-stay discounts apply automatically: −15% from 2 nights, up to −35% from 14 nights. Saint-Malo, Dinan, Fougères and Granville are under an hour away for rainy days.
Winter in the bay: practical notes before you set off
What is the winter weather like in the bay?
Mild and damp rather than cold: from December to February, the Météo-France climate normals for Pontorson (1991–2020) give average lows of 3 °C to 4 °C and highs of 9 °C to 10 °C. On the dyke and out in the bay it is the wind you feel, so pack a windproof jacket, boots and a hat. Back at the cottages, the heated pool water is at 28 °C and the sauna stays open until 20:00.
What stays open at the Mont
The village and the ramparts are free to enter all year round. The abbey opens from 9:30 to 18:00 from 1 September to 30 April, last admission one hour before closing; it is closed on 1 January, 1 May and 25 December. Parking costs €14 for 24 hours in low season and is free in the evening, from 18:30 to 3:00. Hours and prices checked on 21 September 2026; check again before you travel.
Christmas and New Year around the bay
The bay now has its own festive event: Mont et Merveilles, whose first edition ran from 10 December 2025 to 4 January 2026, with illuminations, art installations, concerts and family shows on the Mont and in several villages, including Pontorson, Avranches and Genêts. Dates for the next edition had not been published as of 21 September 2026. Neighbouring villages also hold Christmas markets between late November and early December.
Winter spring tides
Big tides are not limited to the equinoxes: according to SHOM predictions for Saint-Malo, several days in January and February 2027 reach a coefficient of 100, up to 110 in February. Free evening parking means you can watch the evening high tide without paying for the car park. A big-tide day also pairs well with the pool: the sea in the morning, a swim in the afternoon.
Frequently asked questions about winter in Normandy
Is Normandy cold in winter?
Rarely very cold: in Pontorson, the Météo-France climate normals (1991–2020) give an average January low of around 3 °C and a high of around 9 °C. Wind and damp matter more than the temperature, so bring waterproof clothing.
Is Mont-Saint-Michel open in winter?
Yes. The village is free to enter all year and the abbey opens from 9:30 to 18:00 in low season, except on 1 January and 25 December (checked on 21 September 2026). The free shuttle from the car parks also runs all winter.
Are there Christmas markets near Mont-Saint-Michel?
Yes: neighbouring villages, Pontorson among them, hold their Christmas markets between late November and early December, and Mont et Merveilles has brought the Mont and the bay to life over the holidays since 2025. Dates for 2026 had not yet been published on 21 September 2026.
Is the pool really open in winter?
Yes, all year round, from 08:00 to 20:00, with the water at 28 °C under its dome. The traditional sauna, on the pool terrace, is included upon booking a time slot and closes at 20:00.
Can you see spring tides in winter?
